I am considering 500 watts of halide over a 75 gallon tank is this completely crazy. 2 250 watt aqua-medic DE bulbs. This is about 6.5 watts per gallon. Will i be able to keep any soft corals and lps. or can i just keep stonies?

Is it insane? Nope.
You can't go by watts per gallon though.
I did 100 watts per gallon once just to see if it could be done.

I agree its not all about watts. The sun actually provides 1366 watter per sqare meter on the earth. Put a gallon of water outside and you have what? lol

Naa, I think thats very appropiate. I have a friend who has 6 VHO's and 2-400 watt MH's on a 90 gal tank which is just really a taller 75 gal tank. A mag 18 for a return and a small blueline pump for his closed loop. He has a 1/2 hp chiller on it too.

If I were to do a 75G I would have the 2 250W HQI's and some VHO Actinics as well.

I also have a 75 and I just bought (2) 250W HQI's. I won't get them for another week but I know I made the right choice since I want to go 99.99% SPS.

What's the .01% you ask. Just some odd ball stuff that came on the LR.

i use 2- 400 watt 14k bulbs over my 125, which is the same depth as a 75 and i see no bleaching or other troubles. i would have 3, but i have a single brace in the middle of the tank instead of 2
i wish i would have considered this beforehand.

I had a 250W HQI over a 2 gallon=125 watts per gallon. 8)

I think it's perfectly fine. You'll be able to keep softies and LPS no sweat. You may want to move your SPS near the upper half of the tank.

I also used to have a 75 that had 2 x 400 watt MH and used 65k Iwasakis with 4 x 110 watt VHO actinics. Was great lighting...you couldnt beat the growth under those iwasakis.

I keep SPS near the bottom of a 26" deep tank under 250's with no issues so far. I'm sure I'll have to watch the more light demanding things but for the most part I'm sure I'm fine.

6.5 watts per gallon is rather modest in this day and age i have 1240 watts over my 120 gal. 2-400watt10k M.H. and 4-110watt vho super actinics thats a little over 10 watts per gal. but i do have a 1/3 hp chiller i have lps and softies just aquascape so less light loving sp. arent receiving dierect lighting
