So I didn't like the way the foam head my ASM g4x changed when I started running ozone through it. The head got very flat and the skimmer didn't produce the same amount of skimmate. I was thinking about buying an ozone reaction chamber when I spied in my pile of old gear a seaclone skimmer I picked up somewhere.
I set it up, in the sump, ran the ozone to the powerhead and voila and old out of favor product becomes useful again. :D

Oh - the water exiting the seaclone goes through a DIY carbon chamber before going into the sump.

Thales,
What, exactly, does the ozone do for our tanks? I have seen many people talking about Ozone, but was wondering what it was for.

I could look up many threads and read about it, but I figured one good "on topic" question could get me an answer :)

Does it do something to maintain PH or ... ?

Well what EXACTLY it does is raise the Oxidation-Reduction Potential.

Now what does that do, well people will give different opinions. Lots have said it clears up the water making it more crystal clear, even saw one claim that said the water was so clear it looked like the fish were free-floating in mid air. Now who knows how true those claims are, but it could also have bad effects as well if you aren't very careful with both aquarium life as well as your own health!

Search for ORP :)

It also sterilizes the water running through the reactor destroying algae and parasites, which is why it can be dangerous to get in your tank.

:D

Nothin like the smell of ozone in the morning, as it oxidizes your nasal passage on it's way to reek havoc in your lungs

I'll try to take some pics next week, but it really isn't a mod. :D

All I did was connect the tubing from the ozone generator to the venturi on the seaclones maxi jet which would normally suck plain old air.

I am lucky because my sump is under the house with decent ventilation so I never smell ozone. :D

Your not pushing that much ozone either, compaired to the turn over of both your sump/skimmer.etc. I doubt it even enters you main tank at all :D It's got a fairly short life, and your tank ain't all that still

Cool, so now when some shmuck comes into PetSmart thinking he's going to buy a SeaClone and start up a saltwater tank, instead of talking him out it, I can sell it as an Ozone reactor!

So, other than less skimming. Did you notice any positive effects in your display tank? BTW, isn't it almost time for the six mo. update pics? I never had a good chance to stare at it when I brought the tyrant down.

Pics? What are pics? Len has taught me that pics of a tank steal the soul of the tank, and I am too much of a responsible reef keeper to do that to my animals. :D

I like the ozone because I think it makes the tank look clearer, even though I know thats anecdotal. I also like the idea of its disease fighting potential.

Greetings Righty,
Long time lurker, new poster here. Is the bubble column the 'tornado in a tube' that a Seaclone normally produces? If so, you might be better off with an airpump and a limewood airstone for better contact time in the reaction chamber. It might be significantly more efficient that way. Just a thought, as this was a mod that, when used as a skimmer made the dreaded Seaclone actually sort of work. Sort of.

Just trying to help,
Stan

Good idea Stan!

The thing actually works as it is - producing skimmate and everything. If a limewood air store shows up, I'll try it. :D

Oh and

:welcome:
