So I says to my family and friends "I have a fish tank on my leg for christ sakes! Whats that tell ya!!"

Its my hobby and has been for near 20 years. My fish dont trip me in the morning, don't poop on the lawn, don't need licensed, Dont get in fights with neighbor pets, dont need vet visits, dont shed, dont need litter box trained, dont howl and yowl when I dont feed them on the dot, etc.... The list goes on. Now that I think about it, it seems I have always had to defend my hobby. Even when I was doing FW.
Fish are cool. When was the last time you saw a naturally blue and yellow cat? 8O

My wife likes it when it is up and running well. She has some issues with the time and money. My kids really love the tank so it makes it a little easier on my to do. Most of my friends and family think its cool. The friends of my kids love it.

I love it, My friends do as well.

My parents like them.

Wife's parents think they're a waste of money.

He He This hobby along with others was one of the reasons I am divorced now, but it is really for the best. My family for the most part think it's a waste of money, but everyone has to live their life their own way and if true to self, on their own terms. This is something that I really struggled with when I was being bombarded with complaints by the ex, but the truth of it in hindsight is that for better or worse it was supposed to be, not if a person likes your hobby or you like theirs. That alone was/is a very painfuul and expensive lesson I had to learn.

So to answer your question, most people think this along with my other hobbies are a waste of time, but I really to be honest could care less! For the most part, I think alot of what they spend money on is kinda stupid also, and it really doesn't allow them to learn anything, so I am a bit ahead of them since I am learning about nature and other things on our bit of real estate in our solar system.

D :D

Well so far my wife is just okay with it. She does not like the money I have spent, and only know about half of what I have actually spent.

The kids love to watch the fish, but my 2 year old son like to touch the glass, and that drives me nuts.

Anytime some one comes over to the house they love it. They sit there and stare and the longer the look the see more and more cool things.

The wife is a stay at home mom, so yes she tracks what i spend(somewhat), but normally gives me the famous line,"just do what ever you want to do, you do anyways."

SO i guess it works..

My girlfriend acts like she hates it. Funny though, when people come over it's the first thing she talks about and she is a wealth of info from what I have told her. Behind the scenes, she acts like it is ho-hum, yeah o.k., what-ever. I am so confused.

You can actually get away with that?!?!?!?

I'd find certain body parts missing if I don't consult the "committee" on anything I do.

That doesn't always stop me anyway though!

 Yah, I get most comments when my tanks looks the worst. "Quite and ecosystem you got in there". That was a comment from one of my co-workers (PHD in phycology (study of phytoplankton) :D

My wife does that too. She was talking the tank up to some of our friends when I was home last. It's not even done yet. Then she'll turn around a complain about the money. In the end I think she really likes it, but just wants to give me a hard time.

The only time my tank looks passable is when I get the bug to take pictures for this site.

The rest of the time the glass is dirty, the fish are hungry and there are large patches of algae wisping off the rocks.

Taz,

It is actually a process to get that famous line. I wear her down first by begging for what I want. Then I dont let it rest. It gets to the point where it is on her nerves so bad she says"do whatever you want to do, you do it anyways." I dont go right out and do it. I wait until she actually means it. That is how i got my nissan 350z, and that is how i am going to get the larger tank.

I let the glass get kinda crappy often to feed the snails and grow a new batch of pods. It's the truth, really.

Our tank was a joint decision so my husband is on board, although that makes for difficulty when trying to choose fish etc, as we have different tastes. :)

My parents came to visit recently, and after a brief look, seemed pretty disinterested. Everytime something of note happened like the sea cucumber posing at the front with his tentacles out, we'd try and point it out to them then gave in... Each to their own I guess!

I'll bet your dress flys up when you got that 350Z in fifth gear.
