WHAT IS THE DIFFERANCE BETWEEN AN AGA TANK AND OCEANIC TANK?IS IT WORTH THE DIFFERANCE IN PRICE? OR IS THERE ANOTHER BRAND THAT I SHOULD BE LOOKING AT? LOOKING TO SET UP A 120-150 GALLON REEF TANK.
As for the tanks, the glass on Oceanic is a little thicker and the seams are a little more heavy duty. Not to mention they are put together a little more cleanly, check out the silicon on the corners of Oceanics compared to AG, they are just cleaner.
I worked at a pet store for a couple of years in college, and I can tell you from having to lift I don't know how many tanks into the back of peoples cars that Oceanics are definitely "Heavy Duty" compared to AG.
On the other hand, how many All-Glass tanks break? They are both quality tanks, and unless we're talking stands, and maybe corner tanks, the All-Glass tank holds water just as well as the Oceanic.
Oceanic does provide a bit more if a high end finished look, but whether or not this is worth the price premium will vary from buyer to buyer.
Has anyone heard of any differences in quality control since Central Pets acquired them both? I would assume they are doing business as usual but I know it's not always the case.
There's been some shake ups Len, like uber high custom pricing for a spell. From what I've been told, they moved some facilities around. Time will only tell though.
for as long as i can remember. AGA and Oceanic are the same company. i can't recall who owns who. now central owns them both.
the est way to think of them is like toyota and lexus. toyota. great build quality good featurees for the money. Lexus--- all the other cool bells and whistles a few extra bits of engineering...
I have never had an AGA break, crack, deform,.... or an oceanic either....
either choice is a good one.
AGA does not make its own stands. Oceanic does. AGA farms the work out in order to keep overhead down. you can custom order stands thru central pet or Lee-Mar. they will build to your specs and will warranty the stand and tank that sits on it....
As posted above Oceanic does have it's bells & whistles.
We have a 155g AGA at work and my 120g Oceanic at home - and the Oceanic is just a better built tank in my opinion.
The AGA has it's plastic trim and the Oceanic has a wooden trim. The Oceanic seems to use slightly thicker glass than the AGA, but I could be comparing apples to oranges when it comes to a 155 vs. a 120.
The newer oceanic tech series (is that the right line) seem a lot nicer than the standard oceanic tanks that I've seen that were made since oceanic and AGA became the same company. They either are, or are available as an option, made with starfire, nice clean black seams, and a different overflow than the AGA/oceanic megaflows.
The old oceanics really are beefy compared to AGA, but IIRC since they merged the oceanics lost some quality (seams, overflow changed to the AGA megaflow, and thinner glass I think?).
Whatever the specifics, they are all deccent tanks, but I'm not giving up my old pre-merger oceanic 120..
Edit;
I just looked at the oceanic site to check the specs on the "newer line" I'm talking about and I couldn't find anything? Whatever it is that I'm talking about does exist, I saw and drooled on a couple of them at a LFS the other day. Can anyone fill in the blanks here?
