STN. Acro

I've got an Acro that is showing the first signs of STN. It recently stopped showing off its fairly large polyps... they are still evident but really shy. I thought it was a flow thing after some aquascaping. I see now that one of the arms is shedding tissue from the base.

I don't have a quaranteen tank ( I know, I should) so what should I do. I've seen Lugols mentioned, where to I get Lugols... do all LFS's stock it or is there some other type of outlet. What else can I do.. Should I snip off and remove the affected arm? I once, (a year ago) lost a similar looking acro that I threw out after unsuccessfully trying to get rid of bad arms and fragging good arms. This Acro has been in the tank about 6 months with no signs of being anything but healthy.

Seachem's Coral Dip is a bit more mild than Lugol's, so you might want to try that. It's also iodine based. Frag of the dying portion and try a 15 minute dip in either the Seachem or a Lugol's solution.

It's just an attempt to kill the pathogen that might be causing the STN. Then, it's a waiting game to see whether it recovered or you have to do more fragging and dipping.

EDIT: I got the Seachem stuff. The lugols was more expensive but more importantly, it was Kents ... and I don't know why but I never buy their stuff. Also, I should be able to get the mum-in-law to mix me up some lugols for future emergencies

When Frank Burr gave our club a talk he swore by the use of Sea Chem reef dip not so much as a reef dip but rub on the necrosis areas and it would (hopefully) stop the necrosis.

sfsuphysics I was just reading on the bottle that you could use a stronger dose and, if the area was easily assessable you could dab it with the product. It seems to have not traveled any further and I removed the 'limb' that was affected. Keeping a close eye on the base where the limb was removed. Still very little polyp extension but at least is isn't STNing as rapidly as my last acro that went through this.

I thought it was stopping and I was considering fragging off the largest arm when I noticed some white skeleton.... and then I noticed that every arm was losing it. Oh well, Buh-bye pretty acro. You grew into such a nice specimen from a small frag.

I'll be able to react faster next time I guess and now at least I can dip my corals before introduction.
