I have reached the stage where my tank is now ready for more livestock, but my LFS has aiptasia in some of his display tanks. New corals are arriving tomorrow/ Thurs but I'm scared I might pick up Aiptasia from his infected systems. Am I overreacting? (intuitively i dont think so) I have seen how others here have really battled with this pest and dont want to have that experience.

I've bought from aiptasia infested LFSs before. It's usually possible to just visibly inspect the piece you buy, and scrub off the pests before you put it in your tank. Of course, it's best to quarantine your new piece for a while to look out for pests. (That said, I myself don't quarantine)

But I'd say that if you're careful, then you don't have much to worry about.

I would buy from a store with aiptasia.

(I gather from your question that there is even such a thing as stores that DON'T have aiptasia in the tanks? )

Just don't buy corals that have aiptasia on them, and if you see one in your tank, kalk it asap! What causes problems is when you see one in your tank, and think, "Oh, it's just one, it isn't hurting anything where it is" and you don't do anthing, then you are asking for trouble.

simply inspect pieces you get, and don't get any with aiptasia on it, if you absolutely must have a piece with an aiptasia on it just make sure you can frag that off and toss it.

LFS Aiptasia in tanks...Can I still buy stock?

Yes, but my advice to you is do get an online broker with low flat fees, as you'll need all the cash you can get to battle your aiptasia problem. Techs look good right now.

If you buy a piece of rock there's no guarantee you won't have a baby anemone on there. Just keep an eye on the whole rock. Visually inspect all sides of it often. If you see anything torch it quick.

Don't go near it. That is how I got aiptasia. It was ok for a few years and then all hell broke loose. I had to throw everything in the fire and start over. Now I have a new tank, new lights, and it is sitting there empty, with me wondering whether it is really worth the hassle.

Joe's juice doesn't do shi'ite.
