So my mom called me yesterday informing me that my miniatus grouper ate one of my ocellaris false perc clowns. I got home and she was right. This was so weird because he showed no signs of aggression towards any of the fish. But then wham! Gone. He had even eaten already. So I had to take him out and put him into my 29 gal atlantic tank. Im devistated at the loss, but I guess it was coming.

Large ambush predator + Small fish = no more small fish

There is nothing weird about what happened, it was quite simply an inevitability as indicated in your post title. As I so often point out, feeding behavior is not related in any way whatsoever to territorial behavior/aggression in any fish - ever.

Furthermore, 29 gallons is much too small of a tank to house one of these fish long term.

You can read my article on this group of fish here http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2007/1/fish

These are actually great fish for the right reef, it simply requires a large tank that can process the bio-load, and restraint on the part of the keeper to keep it at 3 or so decent sized fish.
