Im going to install a bubble trap in my sump this weekend. Question is.. how far apart should the baffles be? I read one site that said only 3 baffles at 1 inch apart?
I find that the wider you make the baffles, the water has a chance to slow down and allow any bubbles to get to the surface, it also has the added benefit of allowing detritus to settle out which makes for easier siphonage/collection as well as a good place to hang a skimmer in as well.
Another bubble trap for small tanks or those without sumps
I lean more towards one piece of glass and not three pains in the sump these days. I really believe it is a waste of space. Once things settle down in your sump there shouldnt be bubbles returning to your tank.
When I first added my sump it had a lot of bubbles, and to some extent it still does. I removed my baffles for space issues, but I attached a piece of PVC to my intake on the return pump and placed the intake opening (PVC) at the exact opposite end of the sump in the bottom corner. So by the time water arrives at the intake opening, the bubbles are mostly at the surface and the bottom corner is pretty much bubble free. By the time water arrives back in the display it is bubble free and I have no baffles of any kind.
Then maybe it would be wise to try and cut down on those bubbles before it hits your sump. Using a ribbed hose on your return line may help this. Also, you could try a smaller return pump.
