I just received an order of stuff and found a little hitch hiker type shrimp. It looks like a little shrimp pod, but has white and brown/black lines all over it.

The order came from stuff that was caught in the ocean/wild so I want to be sure this isn't a bad hitch hiker.

Anyone know? Keep or not?

I've had these before. I've no idea what genus/species they are, but they're an amphipod. They create little inch long burrows in fine sand/sediment and snag pieces of food now and then. They'll multiply like crazy in the absence of predators.

I believe this is the same exact animal. Does it have pink colored antennae?

That looks like it is almost identical!

Mine does not have pink antennas, or I do not think so at least. I dropped it into my QT tank along with the wild stuff it was caught with. If it makes it through the QT it is going in my tank.

What makes me think it is near exact is the break of color in the middle to end of the back. If you look at both of our pics, you can see that same space of white.

Breed Away! I am ready for more :)

Check and see if they're happy at all out of the water - if they can move with the ease of an insect; let me know?

My dog in Japan used to chase them all over the boardwalk next to the ocean; he'd snag one, kill it and drop it, then go after another. Wierd behavior. Probably because the chick I was with at the time trained him to kill BIG bugs in the flat.

Yeah, they look identical to my eyes too. :D

If you have fine sand they'll set up little burrows. You probably have many more than just the one.
