I have a friend setting up a 40 gallon reef. It will be totally open top with a pendant light, so he needs to think of fish that will be unlikely to jump tank.

Any suggestions?

I've never had a clown or a tang jump. Cardinals seem pretty content to hover in place all day. I've had chromis, gobies, and blennies go carpet surfing.

I've never owned a wrasse. How are some of the more common wrasses when it comes to jumping?

Thanks all

Almost any will jump if startled. I would put egg crate on top of the tank myself. Oh, Angler fish might not jump.

Usually fast swimming fish is more likely to jump. But once content with the tank condition, they are not very likely to jump.

Wrasses are among the fishes most likely to jump, and they can jump really high. Eels are the very worst. Jawfish are big time jumpers if they're not happy when you first put them in. Dottybacks like to jump. Firefish and lots of shrimp gobies as well.

The ones I've kept that were relatively good about not jumping (that would work in a 40) are dwarf puffers, dwarf angels, frogfish, pipefish/seahorses, and dwarf lions. I don't think I've ever heard of a dragonet jumping either. Whether you feel putting one in a 40 is okay is a different matter.

Eggcrate is so much cheaper than replacing carpet-surfing fish on a regular basis.
