my first tank i had crushed coral and my tank was a nitrate factory. everyone told me to run a dsb for my next tank. well im setting up a 120g long now and was ready to plunge into a dsb when it seems like many people are doing shallow beds now or even bare bottoms. wasnt it the anoxic part of th dsb that made it the "right choice"? so hard to find definitive answers. i think im just goin to go for the the dsb (5-6"). i am thinking about caribsea bahamas oolite sand.

Whether to do BB, DSB or SSB is ultimately a personal preference. All three methods have been shown to work well. However, crushed coral (the large chunk size) is not recommended because the large size makes it trap detritus too easily.

Personally, I have a SSB in my display tank because I like the look, and a large DSB in my refugium.

I started with about 3.5" of sand and I'm down to about 2-2.5" and I'm happy with it. I guess it's a SSB. I think sand looks good, personally. No nitrates here after almost a year of it set up.
