change background color

i have a 55 gallon show with a blue background what the safest way to change it to black

Hi. Is this an acrylic tank or a glass tank with painted background? If it's acrylic, you don't really have a safe choice. With paint, you can scrape it off (cover the tank to make sure no paint goes into the water) and repaint it black (again, make sure none goes into the water).

ACtually it can be easier than that. I use blue construction paper with cut outs of yellow and pink shaped corals. Looks kind of cool.
