I have been reading up on ozone but I don't hear many people talking about it these days. Is anyone using ozone on their tanks? I am tempted to try, but the health hazards worry me, especially with a new kid in the house.

I don't. I put out a fire started by an ozone reactor once. Between that and the potential health hazard (damage to lungs, especially newborn) if the ozone generator leaks, I wouldn't risk it.

Ozone mixed in water quickly decomposes to oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. You could presumably mimic the effect by putting a very small amount of hydrogen peroxide in your aquarium every day. It would be safer to you, but I cannot believe it would benefit the inhabitants of the tank.

Some people think aerating a skimmer with ozone increases the skimmer efficiency. This is possible, but it will also damage rubber and plastic and pretty much any other non-glass surface it comes into contact with.

I think your instincts are right.
