I'm planning to move my 75 gallon reef into a 180g in-wall tank in our basement, which we're currently finishing. The wall framing the 180 is perpendicular to an outer wall. The tank will occupy one side of a closet - closet dimensions are approximately 8' wide by 5' deep, with access via bi-fold doors from the rear. We live in the midwest (WI) so we're subject to weather extremes. Humidity tends to decline during the winter anyway, but I'm still a little concerned about excess moisture buildup in our basement. I'm considering venting the tank via a ceiling fan directly outside, and I'd like to in hear any opinions and/or advice as to whether I should go through with this.

One more question regarding the wisdom of installing water resistant (WR) drywall in the closet housing the tank. Good move or not necessary?

I would just buy a room de-humidifier. Venting outside seems like an Ok idea if you can set the ventfan to go on/off with a humidistat, otherwise you will pull too much air out of the house (increasing heat/AC bills).

I would go w/ the WR drywall (green) or the new high desity paperless, good move for sure. They both tend to reduce the potential for mold growth.

I have a Nutone 120CFM bathfan in my tank room accompanied by a fresh air vent to the outside and wouldnt have it any other way. In my case, I have a coolingstat (instead of humidistat) in the ceiling set at 80 degrees. I wouldnt have it any other way. A dehumidifier will take up floor space and require routine maintanance. Be sure to get a very quiet fan if you go this route.

Display is upstairs but when I made the room in the basement for my sump, used the moisture resistant drywall and installed a small bathroom type fan. Currently fan is just on a switch but ideally should place on a de-humidistat.

I've since installed central AC so now longer need to keep the tank temp down with fans but figured was evaporating a few gallons a day into the basement and that was just asking for mold.
