Long term reliability? Happy with the price? Would one in a 33 gallon cube be ridiculous overkill?

No problems since I got one about 6 months ago (in August 2006). I have one on my 120 gallon. I would buy again (and probably will). The price is the only problem I have with it. I can get around any noise issues by mounting location.....other things are louder.

It MIGHT not be overkill for a 33 gallon. I have a 30 gallon tank, but is long and rectangular, not square. Then again, the water might circulate nicely with the cube shape as it hits opposite corners since the VorTech seems to almost shoot water out at slight angles (not just straight ahead). If you are sure you will someday use it in a bigger tank, it wouldn't hurt (well maybe your money supply) to get one now and give it a go.

I was planning on sticking it on the bottom and pointing it straight up. :D

I would think that it would be too much flow for the tank to handle. Isn't the 33G cube only 20 inches tall? You're looking at about 16 inches of distance after the sand and the height of the pump, I would think with that much power it would shoot water out of the tank. Not sure, though. :)

Well the Vortec is variable, so you can tone in down, however I don't understand why you'd want one if you run it at 50% of it's potential.. but then again who I can't see spending that kind of money for ONE at full power :)

i have a vortech in a 33 gallon oceanic cube.
i placed it down at the bottom of the left side middle.
my rock work is shaped to that the pump can blow
all the way to the other side through the rock.

in other words, i can be on the opposite of the tank,
and watch the pump work. this gives a nice circular
flow that is broken up by two 3/4 inch returns on a
swcd.

this pump will also upgrade to any tank size.

a person who works for vortech was offering new
pumps at 300 bucks each. that is a 50 dollars saving.
timbo was his nickname or what not.

ask him right now, get a good deal on the nicest
pump on the market. imho.

good luck

I've had mine about six months now. Been performing flawlessly all that time.

Happy with the price? Hell no. But I love the thing anyways.

I'd think throttled down you'd be fine on a 33 gallon. I have mine on my 40 cube, no problems there.

No problems with mine. Throttling it down will work great and make it even quieter too. And when the controller is out, you're have more options as well.
