I have two tanks a 75 tree years and a 120 one year.
In tank 120. it started two month ago.
Water smells bad as skimmer water what is that telling me?
What chemistry is working here in the 120?
The 75 tank has no smelly water but the 120 is smelly.
75 and 120 are not hooked together.
Change water every two week 25%
skimmer fills cup every day or two days same water.
Clean skimmers.
I dose the same. Feed the same food and amount cut back last month green algae growing in 120.
Changed carbon also.

Nitrate = 0
Nirtrite = 0
Alk = 3.2 megl
ammonia =0
phos = 0
Cal = 450 ppm
PH =8.2

generally speaking smelly water is dirty water. have you had a spike recently, or is somthing in there decaying? Maybe a clam or a snail?

Hard to say :)

run the power head over your live rock. then do a water change. maybe some of your rock is still curing.

My tank was doing that for a while. I finally realized my filter which holds a gallon of water, hadnt been used in a few weeks and the water went putrid inside. It made everything smell like crap. Maybe you have the same problem? Otherwise have you lost a fish or crab lately. There may be one dead behind the tank or somewhere.

You sure you test zero for Ammonia?

Either way, do a water change and run some fresh carbon.

A little O3 wouldn't hurt, either.

Is there any kind of film on the surface?

Maybe the overflow isn't working and gunk is collecting on the surface or in a corner.

What kind of livestock (fish/inverts etc.) do you have?

And do you have any special feeding regimens? any plankton, live foods or blue cheese products?

I'm thinking if your water tests as clean as you stated, then it's unlikely to be the 'water' itself that smells.

Are you talking about your tank water or you skimmer cup water?

Your skimmer cup water will always stink, it's waste. It will gag you to clean out the cup.

The water in your tank, on the other hand, you may need to run some phosban or carbon or both.

I would get new test kits, what kind do you have?

I had a similar problem and the smell was coming from inside the tank lid but I doubt that is your problem, I'm just lazy. I have the same problem with my commode.

tank water not skimmer cup.
I only said skimmer so you all know to know what smell it smells like.
Have phosban and carbon and replace often also.
That is why I looking and why and where is it coming from.

I have new salifert and Red SEA tests and all are zero.
That is also why I do not know.
