What kind of flow and lighting makes your tort happy? Ive had this tort for near a month (it has started encrusting in that time)and in the last few days it is only extending about 20% of its polyps. Nothing has changed and every other coral in the tank is acting normal. I am thinking that it was possibly getting to much of a direct flow from one side and is tired of fighting the current. Yesterday I switched it with another frag and nothing seems to have changed with either of the corals.

Whats odd to me is that it is still extending on the very top and very bottom.

I have this tort up near the top of my tank with strong flow. It has pretty good polyp extension up there, so I know it can handle the light and flow. It never gets hairy like A.milleporas though .... just short, robust polyps. I haven't tried it elsewhere though.

It likes bright light. Flow is not that picky, but I have good extension with it in moderate flow.

I have the cali/bennett/ora/whatever tort... it's all the same coral though, and it too is near the top, the flow isn't direct, but occasionally my OM blast zips by it. most of the polyps I noticed are out on the shaded side more so that the lit side. Perhaps this is simply a throw back to the fact most SPS in the wild have polyps out at night only.

Mine has pretty much been the same way since it was in the tank.

Mine came from a tank with 400w 12K XMs so I put it near the top under my 250s.

If only there was an exact definition of "strong flow" I could compare notes a little bit better. Maybe if you post a pic of your tank I could get a better Idea of where is sits in comparison to your source of flow. :P Maybe My flow for it isnt strong or random enough.

Thanks guys, I just lost three different colonies in different locations from STN for mysterious reasons unknown. Maybe I am being paranoid in this situation. This is my first reef and as things are growing in I am finding a few dead spots and heavy flow spots that the corals may not like.

Mine gets some direct blasting from about 800gph when my ocean motions cycles to the nozzle closest to the Tort. Besides that, it gets direct Vortech flow 24/7, although it is about a 18 inches away. Lots of flow, but only intermittent high velocity flow.

Are all the colonies you lose Torts? I have a friend with similar experience lately. We both can't figure out why.
