i was just told that the proper way to handle starfish is by covering it's mouth with your finger while it's out of the water so it can't breathe air.
i was also told by the same sphincter muscle, that the few dead heads on a colony of trumpet corals was algae, which "either my tangs will eat, or it will grow and look pretty in my tank". :roll:

Its either amazing or stupid to what we all heard through the years while in this hobby. And yet, nothing has changed much for the same stupid answers are being giving today like the part where your fish will only grow as large the tank you have.
In any case, I've seen from the start or better yet before I even began my first saltwater tank that the people working in the lfs not know all of what their talking about. This I learned while after school hours and weekends as a lfs that I had spent much time and after two weeks of doing it, I decided that I needed to make notes on the people who worked there for there all had giving different answers to the same question.
So, for myself in any case, I had learned that I couldn't take just the word of the lfs, least at that time for data of all sorts of information were short coming. Books were not as something in what you could had look for back then and when books did start to be sold, they help little to no specific data on the species and sold from $4.95 to as much as $29.95.
The biggest thing with most or all lfs is, they will sell you anything, and if it dies, it never will be of their mistake that you had to done something wrong. And for as testing, I do that myself for if I cannot do it, then no person in the lfs can do it, just have a test set that is not out of date and rinse the tubes before and after using. Also in what I do is when I do test the Ph and nitrates, I after rinsing the tube, sink the tube in the tanks water and dump, and do this 2 or 3 times before taking the water for that specific type of test.

I in no way can see anyone believing that 8O
""Set up the tank, Put in water and wait a week for the water to ""CURE"""... then you add all the rock and fish at the same time.. This will balance it, bio with waste and you won't have to go thru a cycle" I felt like shooting him.

Your no idea in all of what I seen throught the years in what some did for a number back then or even not all that long ago had a grouper in a 20, just makes you sick to think about it

My LFS guy just told me that I can buy a two lions for my reef. They will be ok and will not bother anything as long as you feed them.
Me: Feed them what
HIM: Shrimp
Me: But I wanna get cleaner shrimp
Him: Those they don't eat because they clean their mouth.

Must be able to keep alive 1,954,654,654 different infections on fish. Must kill 25 fish a week. Must get rid of sick stock rapidly. Must be able to deny credits with no feelings. And most importantly:
Must not have any fish related knowledge!.. who needs it?
Very low pay, no benefits, must work extra hours in exchange for sick fish.
Inquire within, look for the manager (usually the guy laughing at a customer).
