I have a Kent Marine RO/DI filter. Should I plumb it into the water system before my water softener or after the water softener? Thanks for the help.

hi. water softeners are deionization exchangers and people normally run it after the ro part. if you are talking about another water softener on top of the di in your kent marine, it isnt necessary. the water from ro/di is super pure already.

Yes, it can prolong the life of the RO cartridge. I've heard anecdotal reports that RO may need a certain level of dissolved materials to work efficiently, which is to say if the water is already very pure, the RO won't work as well. But I have not seen this information verified.

Water softener removes some "hard" ions such as calcium and magnesium, and replace it with sodium, a "softer" mineral. I think you want to put the RO before the water softener, not after. The extra sodium in the water after the softener may not be a good thing for the RO membrane.

Now, IL has good, soft water. Why do you have the softener? Is the water from well, instead of from the Michigan Lake?

I actually live in Loves Park, 10 miles south of WI. Our water is pulled from a well for the city.
