I know there are some users that own/operate lfs . I'm really bored with my job and there are no quality lfs in my area (basically Wal-Mart). The problem is I don't really know to begin. The main thing I'm wondering about is the display tanks. I figure I could use a few standard tanks for reef tanks , but I know I'll need a display system for fresh and salt water fish. Where can I find commercial display systems or would it be better to build them ? Any help on any level will be greatly appreciated.

Do a good business plan. A comprehensive business plan should work out all these details. By just doing a good business plan, you work them out on paper first - which is way cheaper.

i see full store setups on ebay and craigslist every so often. you might wait for a sweet deal, and then if you still have the LFS bug, jump on it then, when initial cost is at it's lowest.

I'd ask this question in the Industry Forum if I were you. There are some very experienced people in there.

Before you even think of this, sit down and see how much money you have saved, and how much you could get as a business loan.

Then figure it will take a few months to start getting regulars. So add your living expenses in for that duration.

Then add 25% to this total figure.

Then decide if you really want to do it, and if there is enough business in that area to even support the overhead, AND turn a profit.
