Hi All,
I'm going to be moving my tank again soon which is an opportunity to possibly change out my sand with something different after I get all of your opinions. I usually always have to sift the sand around to get the brown spots off of the top of it. My question is, will switching to a different bed, like crushed shell or coral allow me to avoid the brown spots on the bottom? Or does it happen with all beds? Thanks.

Stick with the sand. You definitely don't want crushed shell or coral due to its' largeer particle size. Dirt will get in it like no tomorrow. Also sand is a better substrate for most bottom dwellers.

I have had the brown spots of algae on even bare bottom glass!
