My tank has been running for almost 2 year and now i wanted to change the filter setup, i would like to used natural filter ( live rock and live sand ). Possible to take out all the sponge from the sump and change to LR & LS and used filter sock.

PS: i don't like to see this sponge in there and don't like to clean the sponge.

The procedure should be identical to removing bioball and other bacteria substrate. Need to do it gradually to ensure the bacteria population can handle any issue to minimize possible ammonia spike.

Can the sponge be kept? Is it beneficial? Do you have to clean it? I was told to not clean the sponge.

You have to clean the sponge but not in 1 time, u need to clean some at the time because if you clean all at 1 time that mean you kill all the bacteria lived in there and you need to re-grow them again. This is not good for your tank. And if you let it there without clean it then the sponge will be nitrate production area. Then this is what I would like to avoid doing it.

Let run with sponge less filter and let nature take care = natural filtration.

I would like to do this. Do you put LR rubble in the sponges place?

That what I wanted to do, before that I would like to hear some advice from expert keeper.
In my plan there will be live sand and rock in the return area, the water will be go through LR and LS before enter the fuge with lot of LR & 2 in of LS and then enter the return pump compartment back to main tank. How about that!!

Bigger sump, I don’t think so, not necessary. You still can run with your present sump as long it can put LR & LR in it and space for growing algae.
