I only run a filter sock when I am 'storming' the tank, so it only stays in for a day or two.

Ditto. Basically while I storm the tank before I do a water change. Then I take it out the next day or so.

Broken record here ;) but the only time I use them is right after a water change. I remove them 3-4 days after the water change.

For those that use them, how often do you let your filter socks go before cleaning them out?

I try to do it more often but realistically once a week. If I storm the tank I might rinse it out every few hours afterwards.

Ok thanks everyone. I get the picture. Just a few days to remove a lot of particulate matter during and after water changes.

That actually makes good sense. I keep mine on constantly, but clean it weekly. I loose a lot of pods that way. Out of curiosity though without one on all the time where does the fish poop go??? round and round the tank and fuge.

The idea is that it gets skimmed out. This is beneficial because the decomposing stuff gets removed entirely from the system, rather than trapped in an area of high oxygen and water flow where it will decompose faster. This is why you want to clean it as often as possible.
