I just finished moving my 40 gallon, and stand sump by my self. It wasn't pretty, but when is moving a fish tank fun? I posted a little while ago about pump maintenance because my 5 month old mag 7 stopped. I ended up soaking it in a toilet bowl cleaner that had hydrochloric acid in it. The pump looked new, but unfortunately still did not work. I was upset, but figured it was a one off. After moving all of my stuff, hooking the plumbing back up, I fired up the return. A few clicks and clunks, then nothing. No F***ing way! Took the pump apart and there was similar buildup. Immediately soaked the pump. No go. It won't start either. Needless to say, NOW I AM pissed and out $140. My tank is barely running without a return or my sump or skimmer. My super Krappo Rio pumps are still mixing my salt water from years ago (in storage for 4 years now back in action). Is this a common occurance for mags? Are they having quality issues? I need 2 pumps to replace them (mag 7 and I was going to bump up to a mag 9 for the return) but am very hessitant to get mags. Any other viable options? Sorry for the rant, but when I spend good money I epect things to last - I wasn't even being my procrastinate lazy self about maintenance either. I just assumed 5 months wasn't that long.

Soak them in vinegar. Also try and remove the shaft inside the impeller to clean. Becareful because they are brittle and will break and force you to buy a new impeller. The impeller needs to spin on the ceramic shaft.

Or you can buy a new impeller and try that.

Those pumps are pretty reliable its the impellers that get gummed up.

I have to clean my mag12 every 2-3 month.

I have had mags for years and have had no issues what so ever. I clean mine about once every 4-5 months. No issues, love them.

I was gong to use that, but the toilet cleaner worked damn well. The buildup flaked off (the first pump that failed) after soaking for 20 minutes. Maybe I'll try a new impeller. I think they're like $10. I am buying a new pump though. I need the sump up and going asap. Everyone in the tank is highly pissed at me right now. Except the clown. He seemed to enjoy the whole thing. Now I know why we named him bozo  .

How tight should the screws be when re-installing? I just don'
t want to over tighten.

Did you clean the internal shaft on the impeller?

BTW 0- Vinegar is safer for the tank if you dont get all of it off when cleaning than the toilet cleaner.

No, I didn't. Do you need to remove the rubber end pieces on the shaft and then slide the prop off? Pump didn't come with a cleaning guide did it  ?

Just called Danner Pumps. These pumps have a 3 year warranty from Date of Purchase. Customer service was looking for the manual, as mine have, ehh, disappeared :P ...go figure. Anyhow, if I can't get them working from their advice I think I'm going to get new pumps from them. We'll see. Good customer support is very hard to find these days. Glad I remembered the 3 year warranty!

Yes - remove the rubber ends adn try and get the shaft out. Your problem is probably the magnet is gummed up on the ceramic shaft (this usually happens on my pumps). Be careful removing the shaft. Try and slide it a little and keep soaking it in white vinegar.

I concur with the impeller shaft, I would very often get impellers that "freeze" to the shaft due to build up or what not. and you have to remember the impeller spins around the shaft it should not be locked.. the fact it was still going at all is basically the shaft spinning around due to it already having the momentum of being spun up.

Simply take the impeller out, and try to push the shaft through.. if there's an issue, give it a good firm whack on a table or something.. just be careful ceramic is brittle :)

I would love to try a new pump - Too bad the Eheims are not powerful enough to match a mag12

Hey guys. thanks for the input. Just so I'm clear about the impeller.

There's 2 parts. A big magnet piece, and a smaller magnet piece with attached propeller. The big piece doesn't move. The small piece moves, but only 45 degrees. Also, 2 rubber stoppers (1 at each end) Does this sound right? I don't have one in front of me at the moment so I'm going by memory.

I'll post again when I get home and have time to disassemble the prop. I need to move my RO/DI unit tonight. That's the last thing and I'm finally done moving. Girlfriend reports all fish and corals look good. Fish are eating as well. Hopefully, I can fix one pump tonight. That would be huge.

Yes, this sounds correct. You forgot to list the ceramic shaft itself though. Also, there may be a couple thin plastic washers at each end of the impeller assembly as well.

FYI. I soaked both impellers in vinegar. However, Getting that ceramic shaft out was a PITFA. I thought I was going to brake it each time. Move 1/4 inch and would stop. Long story short, both pumps are working again. I feel like an idiot for not RTFM and just throwing them away. Hopefully, I'll get everything on line tomorrow. I'm going to start a 3 month pump cleaning program to avoid this in the future.

Yeah, blueline and panworld pumps are very nice. On my next tank setup I will not have any submerged pumps, other than my tunze streams and my vortechs  .

Thanks again for everyones experienced input.
