Evil conch from hell

UGH! I was getting a algae problem in the reef... going on for awhile now... then I notice there were more and more dead snail shells. I thought maybe the was bad. Got 10 new snails, found 3 new corpses. The other day when I got home I notice a conch had got a hold of a snail and inserted it's mouth into the shell to eat it from inside out. The LFS guy told me those ate detritus in the sub... I'm going to pull out the 2 conch I got form them when they surface next time and put them in a 10 gal tank... anyone know what conch eat besides other snails?

if it is a Whelk, they eat everything as corals... get off them all

What kind of conch is it, and are you sure it was killing the snails rather than cleaning up the remains?

im not sure a conch would even eat remains would it? its probably a whelk

i also did not heard before that conchs eating!
they all look like similiar. conchs, whelks, nassarius..

Yeah I'm sure it ate the snail... when I pulled the two apart the mouth of the conch was inside the dead snail... it retraced only after I pull it apart a bit... only thing you get left is a dead snail face attached to the little hard round door... I have one big conch the other is smaller... will try to get some photos for id... can't find the small one right now... in the sand somewhere.

I have queen and fighting conchs and they never touch any snails.

It's got to be a whelk.

ya, a whelk. my conches are super gentle with everything, both queen and fighting.
