I found this male emerald dead today after about 6 months in my tank. I originally purchased a male and a female at once. The female is still alive and I noticed a tiny baby emerald this afternoon. How long should an emerald crab live?? Could there be any correlation between the spawn and the death?? I really don't know anything about crabs reproducing.

Emeralds can live quite a while from my experience. I believe their natural max life span is something around 8-10 years. Of course, you really have no idea how old yours was when you bought it, so it may have died of natural causes. THere doesn't appear to be any physical damage. Crabs don't die upon reproduction, so that wasn't the cause.

Just curious: you sure it's not a molt? I've been alarmed a couple of times by what appeared like a dead crab only to discover it was just a molt (which looks exactly like a full crab).

I have bought four emerald crabs in the last year only to have them all die. They seem to be the only thing I cant keep alive. Some things just die for no apparent reason.

I've lost 2 emerald crabs myself. The LFS said that if there wasn't enough algae in my tank, that they probobly starved.

I will keep looking for a soft shell crab. I'm pretty sure the thing was dead though. I pulled it out of the tank and it really stunk! Also, the thing was being attacked by bristleworms.

tell your lfs they aren't qualified to give advice :P emeralds are NOT exclusively herbivorous-they are omnivorous, and should be able to live for years without a speck of algae in sight

i know of no crab available in the hobby that's exclusively herbivorous ;)

Mine lasted about a year. I had one left but I haven't been able to find him in a while.

I was actually watching my other emerald eating a dead snail this evening

My emerald is very well behaved. He eats nothing but algae so far and hasn't even touched dead snails. I suppose it could be because my shrimps are nasty, aggressive scavengers that the crab doesn't want to tango with.

It's because in your phantom tank you really don't know what you have. You just like to make stuff up :P
