I have heard that the units which dispense RO water in grocery stores may not have their chemical media changed as often as they should, but this was more speculation than actual knowledge.

CAnnot really comment much on your spring water...But distilled...The whole nature of distilled water is that it gets produced via copper piping..Copper is a no no for marine aquariums, that is why i choose RO water..

ro is the best choice but, there are many qualities of ro water and you have no way of knowing what kind of filter is being used.. the good kinds people usually buy for reef tanks are high rejection and that wastes a lot of water but we as reefers only want the best for our tanks because its a small price to pay compaired to all the money we spend on our tanks... on the other hand the kind you get at the store is likely not using a high rejection rate filter because that would waste alot and would not be as profitable..... 8)

i do have a ro unit but as you say the waste is all i can say is wow. to get 15 gallons of water i need to waste around 500plus just doesnt seem like i would be saving anything. only been 6 or 7 months so still learning and loosing the battle against red nasty fluffy algea, anyway so i have been putting distilled water in for all toop up water so i have a copper prob now. much more learning i have

Sounds like your unit is not working properly. IIRC the rejection rate is suppoed to be some where around 5 gal of waste water for ever gallon of clean.

quite agree with Wazzel...i was going to say you should be waisting about 3 gals of water per 1 gal of RO water...I would check it is setup correctly...
