My GSP frag looked great the first 3 weeks or so that I had it but now is closing up. Can a high calcium level (545) and alkalinity level (13.24) be causing this?

The calc and Alk do seem high. However GSP normally close up once a month or so for a short period of time. So for them that is considered normal.

Is this higher CA/ALK level a new condition, or is that normal for your tank to this point?

damn, i knew someone was going to ask that. This is a new system, set up now for close to two months BUT the LR and substrate were transferred over from an old tank. This is my first reef tank and only recently started to test for Calcium and Alkalinity. I did not know GSP close up once a month, never heard that before. How long do they remain closed. Amonia and Nitrite are 0, Nitrate was 5 or 10 but went to 0 after adding Purigen. It is my understanding that I should do water changes to reduce the calcium and alkalinity and tempoarily discontinue
adding Two littel fishies C- Balance.

place them in good current-i've found that gsp's and briareums do best when buffeted about mildly (but not directly in fromt of a powerhead spout, heh) they should open up within hours
