Officials: 375,000 Residents Without Power In NYC

POSTED: 3:54 pm EDT June 27, 2007
UPDATED: 4:38 pm EDT June 27, 2007

NEW YORK -- A series of power outages hit New York City on Wednesday, cutting electricity to 375,000 people on the Upper East Side and in the Bronx, according to the Office of Emergency Management.
The 4, 5 and 6 trains on Lexington Avenue and 7 trains were not running from 59th Street to 149th Street.
The outage started at around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday afternoon extending from E 79th Street to E 112th Street.
"There's something happening on the Upper East Side. I can't tell you how big it is yet," said Bob Magee, a spokesman for Consolidated Edison.
Residents said traffic lights were out for 20 blocks on Lexington Avenue between the 60s and the 80s, while others said that the East Side subway lines weren't operating. The outages affected the East Side from Fifth Avenue to FDR Drive.
The FDNY and NYPD are calling in extra shifts to help deal with the traffic problems and other emergencies across the area.
Con Edison couldn't say how many customers had lost power. The city was in the second day of temperatures well over 90 degrees.
The Office of Emergency Management said transformer explosions caused at least some of the outages.
Police were calling in extra resources to deal with traffic problems.
WNBC.com will provide more details as soon as they become available

If you have a reef with no battery backup, a quick and easy solution is to buy an inverter and a marine 'deep cycle' battery.

This combination will permit you to run a return pump and a powerhead with no problem. No need for a heater, obviously. No need to run lights.

This is a quick fix for anyone in dire need.

The power inverter has a cable that runs to the marine battery with clamps just like jumper cables. The end that attaches to the inverter normally has two eyelets that screw onto the inverter. Once connected the inverter has a switch you turn on.

The inverter in that link has two outlets (standard 3 prong outlets). You just plug your appliance, return pump and powerhead (or even your skimmer pump) and run it just like it was plugged into the wall.

The amount of time you have to run on the battery will depend on the draw you are using in the appliances. A mag 9.5 draws about 93w. A maxijet 1200 draws about 30w (just guessing on this one). You should get a minimum of 5 or 6 hours (probably more though) on a fully charged battery.

It's an extremely simple short term fix. No gas engines (like a generator) to worry about fumes, totally silent (except for a fan in the inverter). AND, quite inexpensive.

Fry had a suggestion in another thread in hooking a marine battery to a ups.

If it is hooked to the UPS the unit charges it for you :irked:

a cheaper alternative is a "trickle charger", marine battery, and inverter...

you can leave the trickle charger plugged in at all times and it only charges the battery as needed so you always go into a power outage with a full charge and it won't overcharge the battery.

I am guessing a trickle charger is cheaper than a UPS and is easier to hook up.

any links for the 75 dollar battery?

Marine Battery
That's just one. You can get them at Walmart too.

Matt, you're not missing anything. No need for a UPS with the inverter/battery setup.
You also don't need to get one with a recharger. I see that one for $200. The $140 savings can be used to buy a car battery charger and be usable for other applications. As far as I'm concerned, having it built into the inverter is a waste because it's got a dedicated use.
