Having phosphate issues in that big ol tank?

Have you read about how Joe Yaiullo uses lanthanum chloride to control phosphates in the AW tank?

It looks interesting. I'm not one to experiment on my tank though, so how about you tell me how it works for you

Does it work on saltwater (see no mentioning of it)? Or it is just for polishing RO/DI?

It looks like it is just another GFO, but really really small sand like structure. I just want to know if it is made from pure Fe with no other traces of other elements. It looks like it has more of a municipal purpose rather than aquarium purpose.

Well actually it's used on several different situation from wastewater management, saltwater reclaimation and so on even in mining runoffs...

As far as I can tell it is a coating that is adhered to reg silica sand that allows for the bonding of phosphates. So well that it can deminish phosphates dramatically and when exhausted simple turbulence from backwaashing will fluff the filter bed and shed the used coating. After repeated uses the sand will need to be recoated eventually.

Just sounds like a slightly better tech than Lanthanum Chloride. As from what I've seen, Lanthanum tends to be a bit rough on your equipment :wink:


Not to mention symptoms from an LDO of La causes immediate defication and loss of motor control... :lol: where as this "ferric iron coating" seems to be fairly nontoxic.

Just wondering if anyone had ever worked with this stuff or known anyone who had?
