We all know that anemones dont last for too long in home systems. However I have noted an interesting fact that maybe someone can expand upon. My anemone has been slowly dying and bleaching over the past months. However my friend gave me a good deal on a metal halide. The bulb is old and as we all know as bulbs get older they change spectrums. Well I know for a fact the bulb is hitting the red spectrum because the hair algae is growing like crazy. Plant photosynthesis thrives under red spectrum while coral and reef photosynthesis thrives under the blue spectrum. Well my anemone is doing much better now under the halides red spectrum. Its even eating shrimp again. Im wondering if anemones actually require red spectrum instead of blue spectrum. THis may be why anemones dont last more than a year in our tanks. I know for a fact it isnt happier now just because its under a "more intense" light, because the vhos that were over it before the mh were the same wattage, and kelvin temp as well as the same actinic ratio.

I wouldn't be so certain about this part. Halide systems tend to be more efficient than VHOs at getting light directed down into the tank. Generally the lamps are more efficient (ie. more light per watt consumed), but also, the compact lamps and "point source" nature of the light better lends itself to efficient reflector design. Generally, the equivalent wattage halide system w/decent reflectors tends to penetrate better and produce stronger irradiance levels on the target animals.radonfluxlabs":20b7rs04 said:
