I bought a used tank with live rock. It looked pretty good till I got down to the very bottom and there were two very large pieces of lava rock. They are square and rather ugly. My question is, is there any good reason to keep them? I hate to throw things away and then later on done the line someone tell me how stupid that was.

Thanks

Pam

I don't think lava rock can ever be live rock, and I don't think it has any functional capacity in your tank apart from asthetics. If you don't like it, feel free to dispose of it.

Lava rock is terrible material for saltwater aquariums. They effect chemistry, and I'll only use them in African cichlid FW tanks. I'd use them for lawn decoration ;)

I used black lava for FO tanks back in the day with no problems. I can't speak for chemistry, as I never tested the water.
This was before live rock was commonly available, and most of our tanks had dead coral skeletons in them.

The good ol days. :)
