i have heard from friends you shouldnt put more silicone on old silicone and that you should remove all the silicone and redo the whole joint. is this true? it is a lot more work but if it is safer, i will do it. it is for my sump, not my tank.
Yes it is true. IIRC new silicone will not bond to old. It is more than just scraping the old off and putting new. You actually have to clean the bonding area. Not sure what to use tho. How big is this sump. If it is small just go get another one and save yourself the pain.
Cut the old silicone out with a razor blade, but DO NOT under cut the seam between the glass panels. I can't think of a succinct way to type how to do it, just be careful. Scrape all the old silicone off with the blade after you pull of the main chunk.
Clean with acetone after, and reapply the bead with aquarium safe silicone.
