So, I heard a rumor that the company that makes Lumenarcs is currently facing a lawsuit and is discontinuing the reflectors. The source of the rumor is a pretty reputable vendor/distributor so I thought that they would know what they're talking about. They also went on to say that they are going to offer a reflector that is built based on the same design as the lumenarcs but it has more reflecting power. I'm hoping they're not referring to the lumenmax.

Can anyone confirm this? :)

P.S. This is probably only a rumor! :D

Does Pacific Garden Supply make these now, or is it still Diamond? Or are they the same company?

Our club had a talk from the owner guy, and he said that they bought out Diamond.

Is it PGS that you heard is facing a lawsuit? Doesn't sound right, as far as I know Daniel at PGS owns the patent rights.

I know of at least one other large company who appeared to be blatantly producing identical knockoff's (with a similar name). I had heard some rumors regarding that... but I usually don't believe most of what I hear :)

Given the popularity of this reflector, I doubt it will be discontinued. If anything, whoever owns the patent rights will sell them, it wouldn't make sense (at least not to me) to pursue a lawsuit for a product you have no intention of marketing.

You sure the lawsuit wasn't initiated by them and not against them? Posting such rumors that could hurt a business isn't really that cool IMO. Now I have to call Dan and confirm what I know so I can post a non rumor to this thread :)

PGS owns the patends. Dan was involved with Diamond prior to their demise and like Mike said, bought them out when they went out of business.

Gresham, I would never do that. :? I wouldn't post a rumor in order to hurt a business. Makes me feel like an idiot that you would say that, honestly. :?

Anyways, I needed 4 lumenarcs. The guy from my reef club that gets them for us (along with various other reef products) said that the company that he gets it from is "going with a new line of reflectors since the company that makes them is facing a lawsuit." That is what he told me and I would hope that it is not true. After all, lumenarcs are supposed to be the industries top-of-the-line reflector. If this is only a rumor, it won't hurt PGS but rather the distributor that is making up lies. Am I wrong?

It doesn't make much sense to me either. I want to be able to call up the guy from my reef club and say, "Check your sources. They were lying."

You miss read what I was saying ;) I wasn't accusing you of that, I was informing you this rumor can hurt their business and really shouldn't be posted with out prior research. As it stands, this is 3 hand info. Lost sales is lost sales, how can that not effect the company selling them and making them? Business is business, no way around that. Lost sales is lost sales. As you said, the distributer is going with another line, so no real lost sales for them.

You're right. 4th hand when I posted it here. Could you call them tomorrow and find out what the deal is? Maybe they are suing the company that started the rumor, like you mentioned. You're right, though, the more I think about it the more this doesn't make sense, which is a good thing. :D

Ok, so DEFINITELY a rumor!!! :D Not only that, but the company I was talking about, Coral Vue, is the one being sued by PGS. Dan and I have swapped e-mails back and forth (I had some questions about the LIII on top of the lawsuit questions ;) ) and this is what I found out when I asked if they were being faced with a lawsuit and that I got this info from Coral Vue, this is what he replied with:
Coral vue is the company that we are in litigation with. We are suing
Coralvue for patent and trademark infringement. I contracted coralvue to
make the Lumenarc 3 for me, to distribute the way we always had for the
past 20 years. He never had permission to sell the product himself. All
I needed was a metal fabricator. When I was getting product from
Coralvue the first orders were so terrible that I could not even sell
them on the market. Then I started to see my reflectors on different web
sites I had never sold to. As I would sit and wait for my product other
stores were whoring out my trademarked Lumenarc. When I would finally
get the 500+ reflectors there would always be something wrong with
them(dents, scratches, wrong material, ect.) eventually I found my orders
were being sabotaged while he was selling my products. We have been
doing horticultural lighting for 27 years and I would have never
imagined how filthy and cut throat the aquarium industry could be. When
sunlight supply(another horticultural lighting manufacturer) decided to
copy my reflector at least they changed the design a little and changed
the name. I even congratulated them on making a nice reflector almost as
good as the L3. We are a small company, and I love designing the best
custom lighting in the world. I found something I cannot learn enough
about (Light and life). All I need to know is the dimensions of the
space you want to light and the budget. With this I can design the best
lighting for what ever the application is. If the Guganheim in Germany,
the Smithsonian (U.S.), and countless other public aquariums can trust
me to design their lights I like to think the general public can too.

I hope this clarifies some things, and gives you a better idea of who we
are at Lumenarc Lighting,
thank you,
Daniel Ghiglieri
Furthermore, the reflectors that Coral Vue are "replacing" the lumenarc with is being made by Coral Vue themselves and is the same idea as the lumenarcs.

Anyways, needless to say, I will be getting my lumenarc reflectors directly from PGS to avoid knock-offs and unethical practices. :)

Lastly, sorry to everyone that I might have offended or mislead with this lie that was passed down to me. Like Gresham said, "Non rumor!" :P

So those were the guys Dan mentioned in our club talk. Although it makes me wonder which companies/websites are selling the knock offs?
