Well I completed my three sided canopy for my 90 gal and it is very tall which will give me a lot of options. I ran a diferent canopy on this tank before with spider reflectors and was wondering if going with pendants this time would really keep the tank that much cooler. If not I think I will just secure a 2x4 across the top of my open canopy and mount the reflectors to it. This would leave the 400s about 16 inches off the water. Any ideas?

pendants are much cooler. when i went from pendant to canopy my temp went up over 3 degrees. but if you are using open canopy that is that tall, it might not make a big difference.

As long as you have some room for adjustment for height from water, it really wont matter.

Fwiw, I have a pendant, and I prefer that method. Easy to adjust on the chain, easy to remove to clean or swing out of the way.

my only problem pendants is the light pollution, my reef was(had a crash and we're trying to buy a house so rebuilding is on hold) in my living room, and pendants put off too much light pollution to compete with a tv.

Some really quiet fans have recently hit the market, and it shouldnt really be a difficult thing to keep a canopy cooled successfully.

Very true budha...ours is in the library, so it doesnt interfere with anything.

I also "tilted" the light back on the chain so the light is on a slight angle facing back so it never gets in your eyes.

I kinda like the warm, blue glow, but can see in some instances it would not be welcome.
