Trying to figure out what I need to light this tank...I know the wattage and color temp specifics. What I don't know is how the tank will look with a given lighting setup at the outer edges. Would like to avoid shade if possible.

I've got a 30 inch long tank (actually about 28.75 interior width). It's 18 inches wide. If I suspend a single 250W HQI fixture 10 inches above the top of the water will there be shady areas on either side of the bulb at the edge of the tank? As an example, say, the 30" 250W Sunpod fixture.

If I went with a 24" wide fixture with a 250W HQI and 4 T5s will it have shaded areas on both sides if hung at the same height? As an example I'll use the Outer Orbit or Aqualight fixtures which don't come in a 30 inch width but do come in 24 or 36" widths.

Or, would a 36" long fixture be unruly for a 30" tank? Most of those have two HQI bulbs spaced evenly across the fixture.

ask me, you obviously want mh in the middle centered for one...
and i think you know what to do if you get two..

then take tube lighting, T5, CF, whatever and put that at all
the edges.

a total diy sorta thing. give yourself a month to do it. go out and
get graph paper. make a hood.
