This will be of absolutely no help, but the same thing happened to my branching frogspawn last month. Parts of it closed up for no good reason, so after a week, i moved it to a new spot. The closed up branches still died :( The rest of the colony is doing well though.

my colony has 4 branches all of which are retracted to some degree.
also my gsp colony and this other colony of encrusting sps of some sort seem to be affected as well, mushrroms ,zoos ,sun polyps, torch ,brain ,and monti seem well.

The first question that comes to mind is if there is any fish that could be picking on these? I've had angels that love euphyllia. My current angel nips on only encrusting monitis (my rainbow and superman are constant victims).

I originally bought a bright green and a blue hammer coral. It was the first stoney coral I had ever bought. They did great for a few months, but then all of the sudden, they stopped opening up and a month later I started seeing algea covering over them as they began to wither away. I now believe they did that because they were malnourished and where only doing well to begin with thanks to nutrients stored from its time at the LFS. I made some changes and started dosing calcium (I hadn't really needed to with soft corals), and they started to come back to life and opening up again. The green one was too far gone and I ended up loosing it, but the blue one is still alive and now doing very well. Hope that helps.
