it is the same ferric compound. maybe phosban is purer but i doubt it, lots of stuff sold to aquariums that you can buy in bulk cheaper

i think your tank has problems if you need to use that gimmicky stuff.
easier to just setup a tank that is properly stocked and maintained then
to start buying all the junk we do to fix the problem temporarily.

waste of money.

understandably fcmatt but that's not an answer to his question. Unfortunately not all people start off well, and he's trying to correct his tank. why comment on a thread if you're only gonna take shots at him. thats not what this site is for, AND IM NEW

LA-Lawman -- For my grad studies at University of New Hampshire we actually compared the two in a low scale experiment of a larger experiment but we went with the phosban, worked faster basically it. other than that they're the same product as fungia mentioned. hope that helps. We had a great deal is the ONLY reason we went with phosban.

i used to be like the poster above. had high levels of crap in my water.
but i learned that is not the right way to do it.
supporting other people in the direction of that type of tank husbandry
is wrong.

maybe a bit of shock therapy will get him to see the light! i have
60+ gallons of water in my system and i keep two clown fish, snails,
and a few crabs. i get annoyed at 1 or 2 ppm of nitrates...
time for a normal water change to rescue that value.

I'm all for keeping it simple and keeping water quality high via good husbandry, etc., but I also think that GFOs have their uses. They're not just a crutch to mask poor husbandry (although maybe some folks use them that way). For those looking to run a system with extremely low nutrient levels, as is often the case with SPS systems, they can be a useful tool.

Fcmatt, you have a PM.

What do you think.... Same product... the Price is something that has me worried.

phospure

Phosban

I use 2400g in my reactor at a time. so the cost savings is huge. $53 for 2500g-ish of phospure or $190 for phosban. I know marinedepot has it in the $80 range for 1200g...

what do you guys think?
Ben, judging by the price, I'd give phospure a try to see how it stacks up! :D

I'm curious. If they were the same product, how would one work faster than the other? Could it just be the way they were applied?

I just don't understand how the same product applied the same resulted in one brand working faster than the other brand.

i would normally think this is an assault on my reef keeping abilities. but seeing that chris and most the other admins around here have known me for some years now.....

I run the media only as a check. not wanting to risk the sps in my tank due to some hungry tangs.... I saw the price and product and pointed it out for those new guys who were wondering the same thing. I am not a chemist by trade and i knew someone would have an answer....

mind you i swap the media out every year.....

thinking the same thing. knowing that TLF probably doesnt mill the product, only markets it under thier name... kinds gave me the idear that things would be ok with it.

there is a company on the net called two part solution...
http://www.twopartsolution.com/index.ph ... Path=41_42

they sell a similar product. it is kind of funny that more of this stuff isnt around in the homedepot and lowe's in the pond section.....

Ben, I meant to ask you before, do you get the same results if you were to use a smaller dose and change it more often? I'm just trying to figure out how much of potency this thing's got if you only have to replace it once a year! :D

Also, you clean it out often to get all the detritus out?

I use a large reactor only for longevity reasons... i do not clean out the reactor... When i swap media the reactor gets a good cleaning. I often test the water comming out of the unit. it consistantly reads zero.

the LF reactor i used was ok. i found it hard to maintain adjustment due tohe sponge quality and clogging. I often would get a portion of the media clogging and some tumbling..

the mesh that is in my reactor is similar to the type of sponge on a euro-reef skimmer. it takesa good beating and doesnt clog.

I have a high fishload... so phosphates are always a concern...

here is my reactor

I run a reactor constantly in my sump and do water changes every two weeks. I tested the water before i did my last water change and it was fine,
SG- 0.26
Nitrate-6
Nitrite-0
Phos-0-0.03
I use Rowaphos in mine and it is working fine. I thinkk that they are a good thing to have on the tank, i do think the most important thing is water changes and constant maintance.
