I think this makes mistake number 5 or 6 in my short career in the hobby. I have been slowly stocking my new tank with reef freindly fish. My wife has been wanting to get a "pretty" fish to add to the tank for the last month or so. I have told her no to just about every fish she has picked from the few local stores in the area, most being some form of angel or butterfly. I finally agreed to get either a flash or fairy wrasse, and begain researching them online. Seemed like i wouldnt have a problem with either one, so we went out to let her pick one. While at the lfs, she spots a "Leapord Wrasse" and just falls in love with it. I talked to one of the employee's about it and he told me it was exactly the same as a fairy wrasse. I freaking KNEW i should ask them to hold it for me so i can get online and see if there are any diffrences between the fairy and leapord wrasse's, but with the employee assuring me, and my wife pleading with me, i bought it and took it home.
Well, obviously they are not even remotely the same fish. Lesson learned on my part. I talked to the store, he agreed he would return the fish. That being said, after hearing about the diffrences in the too wrasses and the low survival rate of the leapords, my wife would not let me return it, saying it will defenetly die back at the store. I understand that my tank is too young and too small to produce the pod population that this fish probably needs to, especially early on. But im going to give him a chance.
Day 1, he surprisingly did not bury himself in the sand bed to hide like i read they do when introduced. He just swam back and forth through the aquarium very nervoiusly. At lights out he contined this and eventually buired himself in the sand at some point after i was asleep.
Day 2, came out of the sand around 4pm and immediatly started the same nervoius pacing as day 1. I feed a combination of frozen mysis, bloodworms, cyclops, and tetra flake. He didnt look at the food during feeding. Purchased some live blackworms and live brine to try to entice him abit, he took 2 to 3 blackworms.
Day 3, a little more at ease. Started foraging the live rock and sand for food, like i have read they should be doing. Would still go into the "pacing" if someone walked up to the aquarium. Took about 5 live blackworms.
Day 4, much more relaxed. Actually took abit of the food mix, as well as a good amount of the black worms.
Day 5, been cruising the tank looking for food all day. Took the frozen mysis and bloodworms very aggressivly, even running my royal gramma away from some of the food.
I am obvoiusly very happy about him taking the frozen food, as this seems to be a big concern with these fish. From the small amount of information i have been able to find on leapords online i have read that it can be a very big help if you can get them to eat flake food because of the high water content in frozen food. Any idea's on ways to entice him with the flake food? Also any other people out there with some experiance with these fish?? Sorry for the long post.
Tank is 55G, 50lbs live rock, 40lbs live sand, 2 powerheads(1200gph total), 260 watt PC lighting, seaclone 100 skimmer(mistake number uno, aqua-c in the mail), small clownfish, royal gramma, few soft corals.
