I have a tunze. It ran fine for years; virtually no maintenance.

If I was setting up a new tank I probably would get a couple of the bottom ones (do they have the controller yet) and maybe rely on that solely for circulation.

I don't know what you are doing, so I can't really tell you what I think you should go with.

The Tunze are great. Move a lot of water for very little maintenance. I have one. I don't have a vortech, but a lot of my friends do. I would have one, but my tank isn't designed to use one visually. Still, with the battery backup, I may find a spot for one.

I have a Tunze 6200 with the controler. I really like it. Moves lots of water with little power. I have seen the vortech on some friends tanks. I would not get it for the way I have my tank set up. I'm sure it is a good product.

Really Expensive, but as others have said there is no equal, I've used the way cheaper SEIO model of pumps but quite honestly they suck in comparison.

The nanostreams are nice because they have a much smaller profile. Depending upon what you want for your tank in the long run I'd go for the 6055 nanostream models if you're going to do anything, those are controllable.

SEIO's are crap, do not get one. They require lots of TLC to keep running.

Right now I am just thinking of ditching all my stupid power heads (water heaters) and getting two of the nano ones. (100 gallon Long). So it would be just this and the sump return. I think for the price I could recover it in my electric bill within a year. The main goal is to have better water circulation than I have now.

I think I just dodged a bullet (for the most part) with my recent water travesty, but it made me realize how much time and other non-quantifiable investments I've made, and I really should only have the top-end stuff).

I learned that lesson on my first tank. I bought enough gear to outfit 2.5 tanks. By the time I was done with various upgrades the only orginal part of my system was the tank and stand.

i have a vortech. its cool, i like how i can control the flow of water. and the battery back up gives me a peice of mind. though aligning that thing on the glass and getting as little vibration as possible was a hassle.
only thing is the price...

With the vortechs, you can't turn them to suit your needs. They point straight out. I love that the motor on this pump is out of the tank though.

With the tunze streams you can, but they are much larger (well, at least IN the tank). The whole pump is inside the tank.

The nano streams are nice, in my opinion, and I have modded a 6025 to push a whole lot of water out (maybe around 1200 GPH or so) in comparison to what it used to. They can be turned to point wherever you want. Pump is inside the tank and it comes with a magnet to hold it with. I'm happy with it and it's cheaper.

Hydor koralias have gotten popular because they're inexpensive compared to the first two. They're bigger than the nano streams, though. Pump inside and magnet like the nano stream.

I have heard only good about the Koralia pump, and I've heard the company is coming out with a controller that can slow and speed up to make less laminar flow. I am replacing my Seios with them when the Seios wear out.

OK, I just ordered 2 of the Tunze nanos, which can only be a major step up from what I have now (2 Hagan and two Enheim powerheads).

it was mentioned that tunze vs vortech depends on the setup. Anyone care to elaborate on that?
