Im getting a large layer of purple cyano bacteria this morning, no green cyano at all only a deep dark pretty purple. Is there a reason this is showing up?

New activity.

Added some sand last week

Treating tank for ich

removed fish

no feeding taking place

all other perimeters normal.

Typically it's nutrient related. Did you add live sand or inert? Did you add it over an existing sandbed? What ich treatment are you doing?

Ah, sorry. You wrote "treating tank for ich" so I thought you might be adding something to the tank...

Assuming it's none of the usual suspects like source water, skimmer not working well, old lamps, etc. you might just try upping the circulation in that area.

Most likely it's some organics from the live sand fueling it and will probably subside fairly soon if all else is OK.

OK cool thanks. I just wanted to make sure that ass the cyano went away it wouldnt "die away" and release any toxins or bad things. By the by the green cyano is now showing up.

could you elaborate on what you mean by 'normal' ? and which parameters you test for?

among the parameters you test for, are phosphates one of them? ;)

do you have good circulation in the tank ?
