toadstool question

every now and then my toadstool goes into remission for a few days. I used to get concerned about it but now it is just something it does and I know he will be back in a day or two at full strength.
my question is why do they do this occasionally and when they do only one longer dead looking tentacle thing sticks up and nothing else. anybody see this or know anything about it???

Sometimes they do it to slough off some dead epidermis in order to rid themselves of algae and bacteria that may have grown on their outer surface. Sometimes they do it for no good reason as far as I can tell
