The more fans you have the more your tank will evaporate. I'm guessing that's it. The only real alternative would be to get a chiller.

Where do you live? Did you evaporae a lot less in the winter with the fans off?

I turn my fans off in the winter.

In the summer I keep my water 78-80 degrees with fans.
In the winter 76-78 degrees with heaters.

Oxygenating the water is done by the overflows, skimmer and associated pumps you have on the tank.

i added about 6 gallons a day to my 125 in the summer.
you said "fresh is easy" ....i think you meant to add top-off water to. saltwater tanks are exactly the same. DO NOT add salted water as topoff water. when salt water evaporates, the salt stays in the tank. just add fresh water for topoff.

I evaporate about 1 1/2 gallons a day on my 46g tank, so I think 15 per week on a 155 is actually pretty reasonable. It's well worth it for me to spend a little extra money on top-off water than the extra electrical cost of running my chiller more often.

I run through around 20 gallons a week on my 150, depending on temp etc.

"where are you from thanks again?"

:?: :D

One thing you could consider is putting some type of cover, even if partial, over the sump. Could lower your evaporation rate. If it wasn't for the added humidity in the air (being that I'm in GA, extra humidity is highly undesirable), I would not have a single problem with evaporation, though. ;)

Evaporation will depend upon SOOOO many factors...i..e elevation of your house compared to sea level, humidity outside, humidity inside, where in the house the tank is, the amount of surface area the tank is exposing to the air, if you have a hood or not, how hot your lights make your surface.....etc.

My 75 is in my room which is on the end of our air conditioning chain. There is barely any evaporation taking place....prob a gallon every two days. My eel tank is on the porch...in Florida. Due to the humidity outside I dont think Ive ever given it topoff water...just water changes. WHere as my 10 gall tank in the Living room is at the beginning of the air conditioning chain and I CONSTANTLY add water.

All in all, evaporation IS a good thing. I take the opportunity to add calcium to the water. :)
