Anything that is bad is caused by global warming, no exceptions. I blame global warming for Liverpool not winning the league.

It is not clear at all, you are being told crap by the goverment. Past rises in carbon do not coralate with the rise in temp. They occur anything upto a thousand years later, as the temp rises the ocean realises carb dioxide into the atmosphere, as it cools the carbon returns to the ocean again. If it was a caused by human activity, how come all the way through the seventies the temp was dropping. It was said by scientists then that we were about to enter an "ice age"? This is were the story of carbon causing global warming comes from, a scientists from Norway claimed that if an ice age occurred that the carbon produced by human activity could possibly cause a slight rise in temp which help to reduce the effects of an ice age. Humans were producing vast amounts of carbon yet the temp was still falling? Yet today the temp is rising and it is because of human activity? What has changed? Goverment policy, they use this against third world countries to stop them growing economically. The top scientists in this field do not agree with what is being said. Everything on this planet virtually produces carbon dioxide! Volcanoes alone produce more carbon dioxide than humans. The global temp is rising, however it is nothing to do with human activity, the earth is affected massively by the sun's activity, temp fluctuations corralate with sun spot activity.

Kind of refreshing that to see a UK'er swindled by channel 4's horesh*t, instead of another dumb American.

I did geology also and we got taught the same thing. Never believed in human caused global warming, the program made more sense than the rest of the crap that says global warming is a human product. I have no problem believing that there is warming taking place, i have a major problem with what is said to be causing the warming, have done since i was 17 and did geology. We are still in an ice age now, for most of the earth's history there has not been ice at the poles. Yet we expect the earth not to change because we have become used to this climate. We are responsible for lots of problems upon this planet but not global warming.

What basis is your opinion formed on? Have you been educated in this field? Have you been educated?? Or is it you believe because the majority believe? If the whole world's temperature depends upon the amount of carbon dioxide than it would be constantly hot. The amount produced by living organisms, mainly bacteria( I have also done micro-biology) is far greater than what is produced by man's industrial activity. Are we also to stop breathing? All you need to do is look at past temperature's on the earth, these fluctuations are nothing. So WHATEVER DUUUDE!!!

is it not possible that man's activity is the small amount needed to upset the balance ?

natural systems are fairly fine tuned negative feedback ones-every change in input or output can have major consequences/results, as the balance on both sides of the equation try to reach the new equilibrium

even if we do not know for certain that the result will be catastrophic-doesn't the mere possibility demand the prudent course of action to be one of mitigation?

If you are not sure of the heating source, how do you mitigate?

This became big in the 90's, if what is said is "true" then by 2010 there will be no going back. This is when they reckon the greenland ice sheet will begin to melt. The goverments of the world have not done anything, why? Billions is being put into possible ways to destroy meteors that may strike the earth, anti-smoking campaigns. Yet we are still on a course for global disaster. The only thing they have done in this country is to increase tax. They do this to try and make us cut our carbon emissions. We pay about $1.50 per Litre, it is going up again to make us see the error of our ways. So you are telling me that dooms day is around the corner( 3 years away) and no one is doing anything. If this was fact then it would have been sorted. Temperatures only started to rise in the eighties, yet during the industrial revolution until then when more carbon was being pumped into the atmoshere the earth cooled. The models they show do not take into account the evarying orbit of the earth, nothing, just the fact that carbon dioxide is going to destroy the world as we know it. It isn't even a powerful greenhouse gas. Look on the intrnet, read. Until the eighties the earth's temp was dropping. The world was making preperations for an iceage.

Sorry, that not per Litre should be per gallon. CO2's fault.

Temperatures began to rise at the turn of the 20th century, but it really took on a unprecedented rate after 1970. It was not dropping before 1980 according to any data I've seen. If you have data to support this statement, let me know (and of course, include the source of said data).

You're right in that there was evidence the world was due for a mini-ice age. But in the past 30 years, we are moving in the opposite .... and at a rather alarming rate.

You're also right that carbon dioxide isn't one of the most powerful greenhouse gases. But it is a significant greenhouse gas nonetheless. Releasing an insane amount of carbon that nature sequestered for billions of years is not trivial. Data shows CO2 levels play a correlative role with global temperature. What is frightening to me is that there is a HUGE body of extremely potent greenhouse gases trapped under the ocean due to the thermocline. If the water continues to heat up like we're seeing in the past few decades, these gases could be released into the atmosphere and create a horrific and irreversible (that is, by human hands) feedback.

I think your basis for a lot of conclusions (e.g. "If this was fact then it would have been sorted") falls under the category of logical fallacy. It is most certainly circular logic.

I also believe a lot of your conclusions are based on the film "The Great Global Warming Swindle." The premise of your arguments very closely mirrors the premise of that film.

We can reasonably suspect that CO2 emissions is a heating criteria. We can reasonably predict lowering CO2 levels will lower temperature.

We also know the ocean is getting more acidic due to CO2. In relationship to the topic, this presents a serious problem for corals and a lot of marine life.

I'm sure you don't deny we're pumping out an unheard amount of carbon into the atmosphere. What I don't understand is why you think this can't likely, or even possibly play an anthropogenic role in changing the world.

I do not deny temperatures are rising, i just have never believed that is the fault of humans. I have had these views for about the last nine years. I did however wtch the program, but i also watch the programs promoting global warming. I also believe in the affects that global dimming are playing upon the earth and as the air becomes cleaner, the earth will begin to see a greater rate of temperature increase. I am sorry to say i just don't think that we are having the massive affect it is thought we are having. Looking back at past temperature changes, these are nothing, the erths temperature is never stable. The gas hydrates beneath the ocean have not been found in the atmosphere of ice core samples taken of past warming events. You see i have been intrested in this for many years and formed my opinion (that is all it is) manyt years ago. I have read and watched loads of info upon global warming, yes the earth is warming, yes humans are polluting the earth. At this moment in time do not believe we are the cause of global warming.

I wonder if CO2 absorbs any sort of electromagnetic radiation, and if so, whether that could affect the energy balance of Earth's atmosphere...

The earth's magnetic field is weakening, this is due to the fact that the North and South poles flip. As this occurs it is going to cause mayhem.
In the UK they have want to install trackers in cars so that you can be charged for the use of your vehicle, the price of petrol goes up every six months, airtravel is being taxed increasingly and Road tax is increasing. I have a 1.4L car, i get taxed £130 a year to go on the road and have to pay virtually £1 per gallon for petrol, ontop of this they want to attach a tracker to my car to get more money. Does all the money from tyhis go into researching alternatives to supply our energy demands? NO. These are classed as green taxes. I cannot see any urgency in the goverments to stop a global catastrophe, ok i know they are planning on using the hydrogen from the moon but that will be to late if what they are saying is true. I have always had a big problem believing in the fact that it is us.

P.S gutted Manchester United won the league.
