I was just wonder what is an acceptable temp change from day to night? At night/ early morning the lowest the temp gets is 78, and the highest the tank gets when the lights are on is 80. Is this an ok change or is it too much?
I am thinking about adding a fan to go on during the MH light time, how much would a fan cool teh tank?

Thanks

A fan might help take a degree or two. Personally, I think you're doing pretty good with a 2 degree change. My tank ranges between 78-82. My corals are all happy and growing at that temperature and have been for a couple years.

Your temp swings are pretty darned good. Ive read of people with chillers hoping for results like yours. If you use a fan you should be able to keep your temps near a rock solid 78.

I agree with the previous posts. Your temp changes sound good.
If it ain't broken, don't fix it. :)

Thought it was hot in Miami. You must be running AC to keep your temps that good.
Mine range from 78 up to 82... sometimes a 83+ when it gets hot here. I've got a fan in the canopy all the time, one in the canopy that comes on with the halides, one pointing down on the sump all the time, a bank of small ones in the sump that come on with the halides too.

I still have to be careful if it gets stupid hot and use AC in the house and/or bottles of ice in the sump to keep temps down.

My next move is to replace a large rio that runs my protein skimmer with an external pump as you can feel the heat from the Rio (not to mention they are awful pumps.

Bob in Milwaukee, WI, my sump/fuge is in the basement which is cool, tank is in the first floor living room, I have a fan above the lens that comes on with the MH. another under the lens that does the same, I have an inclosed hood/tank, I do not always have the AC on, I get about a 2 degree swing, no ill efects. in the winter time I do not run the lower fan. These critters are more durable then what is stated in the books.
