Hi all,
A couple of weeks ago my skimmer messed up and emptied half the water from my 125 onto the floor on the day we were returning from a one week vacation (luckily it did not happen sooner). The only coral out of the water was a candy cane and at that only half way out (more luck). At that point I made up water and topped off my tank, removed the skimmer (garbage) and started running carbon on a canister filter. Funny thing, my corals have never looked better!! The other thing I did was place a tube in my tank so that the canister filter removes water from the surface of the tank. So what do you think:
A. I needed to do a large water change.
B. sucking the water off the surface is making for better lighting and O2 exchange.

Also, any negatives from running carbon 24/7?

Carbon is good. I run it 24/7 without any issues. You should replace it regularly to keep its effectiveness.

It's always best to take water off the surface and feed that into skimmer, as that's where the nastiest organics collect. No problem running carbon 24/7!

Are you still using the skimmer, or have you taken it off after the flood?
