removing detrius

my tank has been up and running for the better part of a year now,and im starting to get enough detrius in the sump to where i want to remove it.
i was thinking about just stiring it up into the water column, and letting the skimmer skim it out, im concerned about the nitrate ammonia goin up if i do that tho. my question is should i avoid stirring up the detrius, and remove it manually or should i mix it up and let the skimmer handle it?

I prefer to just syphon it out.

Use a wet dry vac. Only stir whatever you have a hard time sucking up. If you stir it up, the skimmer will get some and your display will get the rest.
