I’ve always been curious where the marine fishes we buy come from i.e. the ocean or tank raised. I believe most clown fishes are tank raised. What about the others ? Does anyone know when of resources on the web that my enlighten me.
liveaquaria.com has a section that lists all of their captive raised stock. Otherwise, I don't know other than to ask the shopkeep.

Unfortunately, most of the fish we get for our aquarium are from the open ocean. Tank raised species are getting easier to find, and I always try to find tank raised fish. The ecological reasons are obvious, but I'm also a firm believer that these fish adapt better to the home aquarium. That's where they were born and raised, so it just makes sense. Liveaquaria.com is one of the better sources for tank raised fish. Many of the other online stores will also label their stock as tank raised if they are.
I'm afraid I don't know of any resources that list all the fish available that are tank raised. Clownfish are obviously the most popular, but there are certainly many more. ORA is one of the more well known aquaculturing businesses. You may want to check out their website: http://www.orafarm.com/products.html. Unfortunately, they don't sell to individuals, so you'll have to find a fish store that carries their products.
The heavy hitters of MO aquaculture are C-Quest ( http://www.c-questfarms.com/ )and ORA. Both do many species. There is also a large group of hobbyists and smaller ventures out there The smaller breeders are really stepping up right now to say the least. Even with all of those breeding, about 95% of all fish sold are wild caught and that's being conservitive. Wild clowns are still the majority here, CB are making a small dent but not a heavy enough of one
Yes, it's kind of sad that there aren't more captive raised fish available, especially clownfish. Even my favorite LFS in the area buys exclusively wild caught clownfish. I've told him I will only buy captive bred. Probably not much impact as an individual, but this is a supply/demand society, so we can all make an impact on this trend if we only buy captive bred where there is the availability. . .this will lead to the demand.
