curious to know if you'all use a mechanical filter on your reef tanks? i have a sump with macro in it and a small filter pad that water passes though, but no specific mechanical filter ie like a fluval or something whats the going thoughts on that?

No mechanical filter here. It will only add to nitrates unless you clean it out constantly. I don't even use a filter pad or anything in my sump.

I have a HOT Magnum that I use only occasionally on one of my lower flow tanks.

I think they are cool for maintenence but I don't use them for consistent filtration.

I use a Penguin 280 mounted on the side of my tank in cabinet.

main filtration is my skimmer. I just added a couple sock filtration in the sump. Too early for me to notice any difference...

I use a micron sock when storming the rockwork or whenever I feel like it (intermittently). I never let it go more than a day or two without cleaning it.
