is it too tall and narrow to use for a reef because of light penatration? i plan on having it drilled for overflow and whatnot, but dont want to start if you guys dont think its worth it, i just havent seen many hex marine tanks is all....
It can work, but tall hex tanks are harder to aquascape. You'll need more powerful lights (e.g. 250W halides) to penetrate the height, or else you can only keep lower light corals near the bottom.
I think 1 250 would be sufficient, I don't recall what the standard width of said tank is but you very easily could get away with a single DE bulb. As mentioned a bit hard to aquascape, but they can be fun tanks, definitely want to do a closed loop or some other system for water movement though, a big ol' powerhead in there just wouldn't fit well.
It can work I have a 56 Gallon high Top similar to what you have described. And it is a community Tank 4 years now with 130 Watt with actinitic lighting for my sea Anemones and they are doing great. If corals are what you want to go with Lens advice he knows what he is talking about.
allright cool, now im pumped. im probly gonna do the overflow in the middle of the tank, hide it with live rock and put it in the middle of the room like those giant round tanks you see at aquariums....
